Wesley White was working as a photographer staying in Thatch Caye, a private island off the coast of Belize. One day, he took out a kayak to the open ocean to take some pictures for his job. When he was somewhere in between Thatch Caye and Ragamuffin Caye, he saw a tiny island with a fishing shack.
Wesley decided to stop by the island for some rest and to have a bite to eat. While regaining his strength after rowing for quite some time, he noticed something moving coming out of the shack. Then he realized it was a dog. A very skinny dog. Wesley called out to the shed to see if someone was there. Apparently, the dog was alone.
No dog left behind
The dog was basically waiting for someone to come and get him. The dog, which they called Winston, was severely emaciated. His bones were sticking out of his skin, and he probably hadn’t eaten for quite a while. Wesley decided to take Winston with him back to his resort. He put the dog in his kayak and rowed more than a mile back.
Back at the resort, Wesley asked some of the staff to help the dog out. They gave him dog food and water and started looking for a vet. They had to go to the mainland of Belize to get the dog to a doctor. There they took several tests to see if the dog was sick. Aside from malnutrition, Winston did not have any health issues. But he had to stay with the vet for a while.
Wesley had no choice but to go back to the resort; he was leaving the next day to go back home to the US. Wesley had to arrange everything by phone. He decided he was going to take Winston and adopt him. While at the airport the next day, Wesley arranged for a foster home to take Winston and care for him until he is cleared to travel.
After a few months, Winston got the go signal. The dog boarded a plane and was on his way to his new home. Wesley drove through several states to meet him at the airport in Dallas. Wesley was worried that Winston might not remember him. But only after a few minutes of sniffing, Wesley was all over him. Now, the two are living happily together with Winston’s other dogs. What an incredible story.
